UNT Neurodiversity Initiative

The Neurodiversity Initiative provides access to and information about a variety of groups, training opportunities, and research efforts that are designed to promote awareness, understanding, and acceptance of students, faculty, and staff in our university community who are neurodivergent. An example of this someone who has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum condition. Our university community values creativity, caring, and resilience. Neurodivergent members of our community have creative contributions to make. They are eager to collaborate on making our university a more caring place. And they exhibit a great deal of resilience--to be able to make it through a class period, a semester, or a degree, and to be effective in a faculty, staff, or administrative role.

Student support activities include:

  • UNT ENGAGE: the mission of UNT ENGAGE is to encourage a neurodiverse and inclusive campus by supporting the success of neurodivergent students in post-secondary education and beyond through individualized, student-centered services.
  • UNT Office of Disability Access: which "exists to prevent discrimination on the basis of disability and to help students reach a higher level of independence" (from ODA site) and helps students with accommodations in classes.
  • Tuesday Night Flight: a social support group for students on the autism spectrum.
  • Eagle Chat: a peer-support group.
  • UNT Collaborative Action for the Neurodiverse (UNT CAN): a Housing cohort that provides an opportunity for students who self-advocate as being neurodivergent to participate in a peer-based program focused on delivering individualized, wrap-around services within the residence hall.
