About Computing/Laptops/Student Printing

The Spark Makerspace is a unique technology lab that includes standard computing lab resources such as desktops, laptops, flatbed scanners, and student printing. The Spark and the UNT Library workstations are provided as part of the UNT student computer labs available to UNT students. The Spark also has a specialized workstation that is specific for makerspace equipment and training.

As part of the UNT Student Computer Labs, one of our primary goals is to provide computing services to the UNT community and to facilitate the academic pursuits of UNT students with their computing needs.

To provide an environment that will be supportive of our patron's academic pursuits, including continuing to provide some space that allows for a quiet, non-distracting atmosphere, the facility respects and follows a basic set of procedures.

Laptop Lending Program

The Spark administers a laptop lending program with multiple levels of loan periods available within a given semester.

The most popular is the semester laptop lending program which offers a select number of MAC and Dell laptops that are available for one semester.  To be considered for the opportunity, students must submit their information into a drawing, understand that pick-up starts the week before the semester starts, attend a Laptop Lending Program workshop and sign the Contract of Responsibility for the loaner equipment. The drawing will open at least 1 week prior to the start of the semester.  When the drawing is open, a link will be available below to submit your information into the pool. Putting your name in the drawing is not a guarantee that you will be chosen for a laptop, as the process is entirely random.

The quantity of laptops available for checkout changes every semester depending on availability. Laptops vary in condition and although the libraries helpdesk will look at minor software issues, the laptops are not eligible for replacement. Note: batteries on laptops do slowly wear out and some laptops may have to be plugged in, in order to take a test that uses the Respondus Lockdown browser. Check here for FAQ's about the program.

Spring 2025 Laptop Lendging Lottery is now open.  You can now put your name on the lottery list for the spring 2025 laptop lottery. A few things to note about the program:

  1. Laptops are for general computing purposes and will provide access to the virtual software UNT has available for students
  2. Signing up on the list does not guarantee your name will be drawn for a laptop. The number of laptops available does not match the number of student in demand, so it is a drawing.
  3. There are far more DELL laptops than MACs. So unless you absolutely need a MAC, you have a higher chance of getting DELL.
  4. You are the ONLY person allowed to pick up the laptop
  5. You MUST have your UNT ID to sign the legal paperwork to borrow a laptop
  6. Lottery notices start the week before the semester starts and you have a 7 day window to pick up the laptop or complete the instructions included in the email you receive.
  7. You must have Multi-factor Authentication through DUO set up in order to check out a laptop. This can be done prior to arriving to check out the laptop. The tutorial is available online from UNT System IT.
  8. To add your name to the lottery list click the icon below:

LAPTOP CHECKOUT LOCATIONS

The following library service desks provide laptop checkouts during hours of operation. MacBooks are only available at Willis Library.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES AND REMINDERS

  • Do not sync your iPod or other MP3 players with iTunes. You might lose information as the laptops are set to erase.
  • The Libraries and SPARK are not responsible for the loss of or damage to a user’s file during the loan period.
  • The Libraries and SPARK are not responsible for any computer viruses that may be transferred to, or from, a user’s storage device.
  • The Libraries, SPARK, or UNT cannot be held responsible for any information (credit card numbers, social security numbers, etc.) that is compromised through the wireless network.
  • The laptop is your responsibility while it is checked out to you. Never leave the laptop unattended.

SAVING YOUR WORK

  • Do not save any files to the laptop's hard drive. They will be erased when the laptop is turned off.
  • Files can be saved to a personal storage device or your UNT Student Storage Space on OneDrive.
  • Once the computer is shut down, any files saved on the hard drive will be erased.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

  • If you experience problems with your borrowed laptop, please return it to the appropriate desk. You will be given another laptop, if available.
  • Technical Support and Software Application questions may be directed to the Libraries’ Help Desk, or (940) 565-3024. The Help Desk is staffed 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

SECURITY WARNINGS/INFORMATION

  • Laptop borrowers are expected to have read the most current version of the UNT Information Security Handbook. The Information Security handbook contains UNT computing guidelines and policy for UNT faculty, staff, and students. This document is available for review and print and is required reading for anyone using UNT computing resources. Departments that work with financial, medical, academic, or any other sensitive information are required to read the security handbook and become familiar with the policies and guidelines listed within as a continued effort by The University of North Texas to prevent FERPAHIPAAGLBADMCA, and Federal Copyright Law violations.
  • Laptop borrowers are expected to refrain from deleting, modifying, or otherwise altering any hardware or software including display and desktop settings. Personal software or files should not be saved or installed on the laptop's hard drive.
  • All users are expected to use the libraries’ wireless access in a legal and responsible manner, consistent with the educational and informational purposes for which it is provided.
  • The UNT wireless network should be treated as an insecure network. There can be un-trusted parties between you and anyone with whom you communicate, and any information being transmitted can potentially be intercepted by other wireless users. Cautious and informed wireless users choose not to transmit personal information (credit card numbers, social security numbers, passwords, or any other sensitive information) while using any wireless connection. Please take appropriate precautions when using the wireless connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

What is the laptop lending program?

A.

Supported by a partnership between the UNT Library and the UNT Student Computer Labs, the Spark offers 3 loan terms (semester, 2 week, 24hr) for laptops to support student computing needs. More detail on the loan program is available here

Q.

Who can checkout a Spark laptop?

A.

Currently enrolled (in the active semester) UNT students, who are in good standing with UNT and the Library are eligible to check out a laptop from the Spark

Q.

Where do I get a laptop?

A.

The Spark Technology Service Desk is on the first floor of Willis Library. Turn to the right after entering the front doors and you will see The Spark desk along the north wall of the building.

Q.

How do I get a laptop?

A.

To check out a laptop, you must have a valid (swipe-able) UNT ID card and go to the Spark service desk.

  • 24-hour Laptops are first come first serve

  • 2-Week laptops- are first come first serve with a waitlist that is kept at the Spark service desk if we have run out.

  • Semester laptops-Laptops that are in the semester loan program are assigned via a lottery drawing the week prior to each long semester. For more information about signing up for the lottery please go here.

Q.

Why do I have to sign a loan agreement to check out a laptop?

A.

Laptops are on loan, which means financial and physical responsibility for the items is transferred to the individual who checks out the laptop, therefore at checkout, individuals are required to review and sign the loan agreement stating that you understand you are taking responsibility for state resources.

Q.

Who is responsible for lost/stolen/damages that occur while the laptop is checked out to me?

A.

You are. It is the individual who borrowed the laptop's responsibility to take care of properly securing the laptop. In the event something happens to the laptop while on loan, you are responsible for reporting it to The Spark, and in the case of stolen then also to the police. In the event any Spark equipment is part of a police report, the case number and information should be submitted to The Spark

Q.

Why do I need to allot up to 20-30 minutes for checkout/setup of 2-week and semester laptops?

A.

We make every effort to minimize the checkout time for each laptop, however, after signing the loan agreement each user must take a few steps to technically set up the laptop through a guided self-service while in the building. This step will make sure the laptop gets logged in with your UNT EUID and password and creates a local account. In addition, a team member will be available to assist or answer questions.

Q.

How Do I install software on the loaner laptop?

A.

Only pre-approved applications will be available for installation on the 2 week and semester laptops. 24hr laptops are locked and cannot have applications installed. To see the available options, you will need to use Software Center and Self Service:

DELL USERS:

To launch Software Center on your computer:

The search results will be displayed

Click Software Center

Review/Install desired available software

Please note depending on your internet connection, sometimes the installation fails. Retry after you are confident you have a strong internet connection

MAC USERS:

To launch Self Service on your computer:

Note that a number of specialized applications have been made available through MyLab as well as myuntlab.cloud.com For a video to explain MyLab and the Cetrix Client go here.

Don’t see the app you were looking for? You can submit a request through this form

Q.

What if Software Center is not loading on my DELL laptop?

A.

Be advised: If you open Software Center, but do not see any applications, the system may need to be on the network for a little while to ensure the system loads. Once it has successfully loaded the first time, it should be rare to have these issues again (unless you have a slow network connection that may cause dropped packets). If there are no apps displaying in software center first try:

1. Open Software Center

2. Go to "Options" on the left-hand side of the screen

3. Click "Computer Maintenance"

4. Click "Synch Policy"

5. Go to "Device Compliance" on the left-hand side of the screen

6. Click "Check Compliance"

You may have to complete this process several times.

Q.

What is the first login process for the 2 week and semester laptops?

A.

DELL USERS:

  • Connect to the UNT Wi-Fi- (use UNT, not eaglenet)
  • Login into the Cisco AnyConnect (vpn2.unt.edu) and (EUID & Password)
  • Login to the desktop with your EUID and password

MAC USERS:

Due to setting up a laptop for you, the first login must be on UNT's wired network and will be done at checkout which may take 5-20 minutes

Then it will have your name from your EUID and password

Q.

What is the VPN address?

A.

When needing to access the UNT VPN use: vpn2.unt.edu or vpn.unt.edu either should work

Q.

What client do I use to get on the VPN?

A.

For Dell: CIsco AnyConnect  Microsoft Apps
For Mac: VPN (on the top right corner menu bar)  Mac VPN

Q.

My Laptop battery does not stay at 100% when I unplug it?

A.

Batteries slowly lose the ability to hold a 100% charge. So it is possible that if you are taking an online class that requires a laptop to be at 100% charge, you will need to leave the laptop plugged into the wall to meet the requirement.

Q.

Should I save my data on the laptop?

A.

No, at least not as the only place. We highly recommend you save your data to an external drive and/or a cloud solution such as your OneDrive.

Q.

What if I need a MAC, but there is not one available?

A.

If you need to use a MAC but were assigned a DELL, note that you can use the virtual machine provided through mylab.unt.edu and select Guacamole (the Apple/MAC option)

Q.

Is there a waitlist for laptops?

A.

After all lottery laptops have been assigned, if there are laptops available or if laptops become available during the current semester, we will contact individuals from the traditional waitlist. To get on the waitlist you must come in to The Spark Service Desk and swipe your ID. IF a laptop becomes available at some point during the current semester, individuals will be contacted with a deadline for being able to pick IT up.

Q.

Will I get a fine if I am late?

A.

Yes! Make sure you turn in your laptop on time. These are shared resources for all 42K+ students at UNT and we do not have enough laptops for everyone. So returning the unit is critical to helping out other students who need access. For fines policy information, please go here. Fine rate information is available here.

Q.

How to get Adobe CC on a loaner laptop?

A.

Due to Adobe Creative Cloud licensing, you will have to use a personal subscription and you can get a discounted rate here: Student Discounted License

Q.

Who do I contact for assistance?

A.

You can contact The Spark on chat or thespark@unt.edu or 940-369-5259

Software and Security

The applications available on the desktops and laptops supported by the Spark meet the UNT computer lab systems standards for student computing. The chart below outlines the various software and what type of machines the software is available on from The Spark. It is important to note that UNT provides access to remote software that does not need to be installed a the given station. To get more information on remote access go to mylab.unt.edu

In the event the software available from the Spark does not meet your needs you can submit a Software Technology Review request however not all requests will pass the tech review. Therefore it is important to remember that the computer lab system has a number of virtual and physical lab options that should be able to support your academic required computing needs.

If you would like to request a technical review for an application to be considered for the desktop or laptops support by the Spark, please complete the following form.

Student Printing

First thing to note is that UNT uses papercut to manage the print system for students. If using a student computer inside the Libraries, the client for papercut is on the workstation and once selecting to print you will be prompted to authenticate with your UNT EUID and password. However, if you are using a mobile or personal device papercut is accessible through the web at https://printing.unt.edu

Cost of Printing

Cost of Printing
Type Ink Cost
Double sided Black and white $0.05 per page
  Color $0.19 per page
Single sided Black and white $0.03 per page
  Color $0.10 per page

HOW TO PRINT

Below we will go over the steps to 1) submit your print job to a printer queue from both the desktop and the web and 2) how to then release your print job from a station and your personal mobile device.

Submitting a print job from the desktops:

  • Once you have prepared your document/s and are ready to print. You can use file print to begin.
  • Select the proper print queue which in the Libraries is: UNT-SCL-B&W on campus print or UNT-SCL-COLOR on campus print depending on if you would like to print in color.
  • Then select the print button.
  • Papercut will pop up and ask for your credential which are your UNT EUID and password

this image is what the prompt from papercut looks like with the statement "Your login credentials are required for printer acess. and then a data entry box for username and a data entry box for password.

  • Click ok
  • Then the Print Job Notification Page will display, review the page for accurate information

Print Job Notification sample picture that shows document name, printer, pages and cost of the print job being sent to the printer

TIP: Students will only be able to print using the "Charge to my personal account" but staff may have a shared account, if printing for your work ask you supervisor if you are suppose to print from a shared account.

  • Once you have verified the information select the print button.
  • You will see a pop up in the bottom on the desktop, notifying you that the print job has been held in the queue.
  • Next step  Release a Print Job below

Submitting a print job from a mobile device:

  •  Select Web Print from the menu a picture of the left side menu when logged in to papercut showing to select 'Web Print"

Please note that this has simply sent the files you wish to print in to a holding queue for the printers. You must also go through the Release a Print Job steps outlined below.

Release a Print Job

As a part of the Return to Learn efforts at the UNT campuses, we are encouraging the use of the mobile release process.  So whenever possible we do encourage you to take advantage of the mobile release process.

There are printers located on the Lower Level, First Floor, Second Floor and Fourth Floor of the Willis Library building. There is one color printer in Willis Library which is located on the first floor and is a multifunctional printer and one in Sycamore Library.

Mobile Release:

When in Willis Library, each printer has a unique QR code posted on the printer.

  • Walk up to the printer and using your mobile device scan the QR code.
  • login with your EUID and password
  •        image of the login screen for qr code specific release station

  • then you will see you are on the Jobs page, at the bottom of the page you will see a green button that says Release, select the Release button to send your prints to the printer.

Walk Up or Traditional Release:

In the event that the Mobile Release option will not work for you, we have at least one traditional release station on the first floor of Willis Library and at least one on the second floor of the Willis Library building, and one in Sycamore Library. In a traditional release station, you will find a monitor, keyboard and mouse set up directly next to the printer. Using the keyboard if you type in your EUID and password on the release station, you will be able to release your prints on that printer.

In addition to the traditional release station the Multifunction printer throughout the library (the printers with a scanner on top) which includes the color printer on the first floor, the Multifunctional black and white printer on the 2nd floor, the multifunctional printer on the fourth floor in Willis Library, as well as the color printer in Sycamore Library and a multifunctional printer in Discovery Park Library, has a built in release screen on the printer. On the release screen you will be prompted for your EUID and password to login and then you will see your jobs that are held in the queue and you can then release the prints there.

NOTE: you are not charged for a print until your release it.

Print Etiquette

Printing is a shared resource at UNT, a campus with a passion for conservation and BEING GREEN! It is important that each user is respectful of the printing resources. It is very important that we all do our part to be courteous to others and conserve time, paper and toner.

Please keep the following in mind when using print services at UNT:

  • Be kind and wait your turn. Although you may be able to scan the QR code while waiting in line, we recommend you wait to actually release until you reach the printer. The unit could run out of toner/paper or have an issue and you already released the job and have now used your quota and will either have to wait until the printer is able to print the document
  • Large print jobs should be broken in to smaller parts to print and whenever possible printed in off peak hours
  • If you find a print that is not yours turn it in to the SPARK desk
  • Large power points are best printed as a PDF with multiple slides per page. Also if there are a number of images and actions in the print use the print as image feature

Student Printing @ UNT

Printing in the UNT Student Computer Labs

Printing is a service provided by the UNT Student Computer Labs to all currently-enrolled UNT students. To provide more services to students and meet students' changing academic needs, the UNT SCL network uses a print credit system. This print credit system provides students with the following benefits.

  • Check the lab locations to view each lab's printing capabilities and options.
  • Students take responsibility for their printing.
  • Students print to meet their academic needs.
  • SCL reduces the number of printing restrictions currently in place.
  • SCL continues meeting the printing requirements of UNT students without raising fees.

Printing Information

How does the print credit system work?

Each UNT student is given a virtual printing "credit" at the beginning of each semester they are enrolled. When printing at one of the UNT SCL labs, this virtual printing credit decreases based on the calculated cost of that print job. Virtual printing credits are reset back to the starting credit balance when dorms open for the start of the next semester.

Is this an additional fee for printing?

The virtual printing credits students receive each semester are not "added on" to the fees students already pay, but are instead allocated from the portion of the Technology Use Fee already dedicated to supporting the Student Computer Labs. Virtual printing credits have no monetary value and cannot be transferred or converted to an actual cash balance.

How is the cost of a print job calculated?

Printing is provided by the UNT SCL network at the following rates.

  • Three cents ($0.03) for one single-sided black-and-white-printed sheet.
  • Five cents ($0.05) for one double-sided black-and-white-printed sheet.
  • Ten cents ($0.10) for one single-sided color-printed sheet.
  • Nineteen cents ($0.19) for one double-sided color-printed sheet.

Refunds

There is no refund option once the printing credit is used, so please proofread your work before printing. If you experienced a printing problem due to a printer malfunction, report it to the nearest lab staff member for a reprint for no additional cost.

Students who experience issues with their print-credit balance should submit a support request through Service Now.

How can students check their print-credit balance?

Students can view their current printing-credit balance, overall print usage, and the environmental impact of their printing by visiting the printing.unt.edu website and logging in using their EUID and password. Students must be on the UNT network to access this website.

What if students exceed their initial print credit?

Students who expend all of their allotted printing credits may purchase additional printing credits.

  • Go to printing.unt.edu to view your account summary
  • Click on Add Credit in the menu on the left
  • Select the dollar amount you want to add, then click on the Add Value button
  • Complete the purchase using your credit card

Purchased printing credits can be used to print in any UNT Student Computer Lab. However, unlike printing credits given at the start of the semester, purchased credits will carry forward to the next semester.

Printing Limits
  • Some labs enforce a 20-sheets-per-print-job rule to control printing traffic. This translates to 20 pages of single-sided printing or 40 pages of double-sided printing. Ask the lab staff on-site about this rule for the particular lab visited. Patrons are encouraged to use double-sided printing when available and appropriate.
  • Lab Managers have the authority to restrict printing and/or lab access from any patron who abuses printing policies.
    • Lab Managers document printing policy abusers and share that information with other lab managers.

Censorship & Offensive Material

Freedom of Expression

The University of North Texas has the following official policy regarding censorship:

Censorship is not compatible with the goals of the University of North Texas. The University will not limit access to any information due to its content as long as it meets the standard of legality. The University does reserve the right, however, to place reasonable time, place and manner restrictions on freedom of expression on its computer systems.

In cooperation with the official University policy, the UNT Student Computer Labs have adopted these procedures regarding access to offensive materials in the computer labs:
  1. The Student Computer Labs cannot police the activities of our patrons and will not assume that responsibility. If a patron in the Student Computer Labs is offended by material being viewed by someone in the lab, that patron should notify the lab employee on duty. The lab employee will take the following steps to resolve the problem:
  2. The lab employee will move the offended patron to another computer station which is not in a direct line of sight of the offensive material, assuming space is available.
  3. If this is not a satisfactory solution to the offended patron, the lab employee will ask the patron viewing the potentially offensive material to move to a computer station where other patrons will not be exposed to the contents of his or her monitor screen. Once again, this is conditional upon available space in the lab.
  4. If neither of these actions are acceptable to the patrons, or if there is no space available in the lab to relocate one of the patrons, the lab employee may ask one or the other patron to come back at a later time.
  5. If none of these attempts by the lab employee are acceptable to the patrons, the lab employee will ask both patrons to check out of the lab; the Student Computer Labs will not take sides in this matter.
It is in the best interest of our lab patrons to respect the rights and privacy of others while using the UNT Student Computer Labs.
