Looking for a fun and easy sewing project? Making your own scrunchies is a great way to use leftover fabric and personalize your accessories! Follow along with the photos below to make your own scrunchie using a sewing machine. The Spark Makerspace has sewing machines available for students to check out in-space and sewing machines available to take home!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Materials

  1. Fabric (around 18 x 4 inches)
  2. ¼-inch elastic (8–9 inches)
  3. Scissors
  4. Safety pin
  5. Sewing machine
  6. Pins or clips

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Start by gathering your materials: fabric (about 18 x 4 inches), ¼-inch elastic (8–9 inches), scissors, a safety pin, pins or clips, and a sewing machine.

2. Fold your fabric lengthwise with the right (shiny) sides facing each other.

3. Using a sewing machine, sew along the long edge of the fabric, leaving both short ends open.

4. Next, use a safety pin to turn the tube right side out. Attach the pin to one end and slowly pull it through.

5. Now the shiny side of the fabric is on the outside. This creates a fabric tube.

6. Attach the safety pin to one end of the elastic and carefully insert it through the fabric tube. Be sure to hold or pin the other end so it doesn’t slip inside.

7. Once the elastic is completely inside, sew the two elastic ends together securely.

8. To finish, tuck one end of the fabric inside the other, hiding the raw edges. Pin in place and sew straight across to close the scrunchie.

9. Fluff the fabric evenly around the elastic, and your scrunchie is ready to wear! You can try different fabrics and sizes to suit your personal style!
