Video Creation

This guide outlines the strategic directions and strategies for creating library instructional videos.

Video Creation Process

The Video Creation Process is a comprehensive framework that guides the creation of instructional videos for UNT Libraries. This process can be divided into four parts including Plan, Create, Promote, and Manage. Please use the navigation bar to explore each of the parts in detail.

Video Creation Process: Plan, Create, Promote, and Manage

Accessibility

Accessibility plays a key role in video creation as it ensures videos can be accessed, understood, and enjoyed by individuals with varying abilities. To ensure videos meet minimum accessibility standards, the OLL will work with the video creator (those creating instructional videos) to include:

  • Closed Captions: Captions should be accurate, synchronized, and include speaker identification and non-speech elements.
  • Audio Description: For videos with significant visual content, audio descriptions provide additional narrated descriptions of visual elements.
  • Visual Contrast: Ensure that visual elements within the video have sufficient contrast to be distinguishable for individuals with low vision or color vision deficiencies. This includes text, graphics, and other visual elements.
  • Keyboard Accessibility: Video controls, buttons, and interactive elements should be operable using keyboard navigation alone, without the need for mouse or touch interactions.

Video Creation Roles

Library instruction videos are created by the video creators and the OLL. This section will outline the roles and responsibilities of each collaborator in the video creation process.

  • Subject Matter Expert (SME): Video creators are the experts when it comes to content; they decide what makes (or does not make) the cut.
  • Scripter: Video creators will be responsible for creating a script and explaining how they would like the video to look.
  • Recorder: Video creators will record their video or work with Marketing & Communications Unit to record a professional quality video.
  • Promoter: Video creators will assist in promoting their videos to raise awareness, reach a wider audience, and deliver relevant content.
  • Supporter: The OLL is here to help the video creator every step of the way and provide support when needed.
  • Accessibility Advocate: The OLL will review scripts for accessibility to ensure all viewers will be able to access valuable information.
  • Editor: The OLL (or Marketing & Communications Unit) will edit your videos.
  • Project Manager: The OLL will manage the video creation process to ensure the video meets the project's goals within the given time constraints.

In some cases, large-scale video initiatives (e.g., university-wide) require collaboration with Marketing & Communications Unit. In this case, Marketing & Communications Unit will serve as:

  • Communicator: Marketing & Communications Unit is here to provide open lines of communication regarding the video.
  • Editor: Marketing & Communications Unit will record video footage and make edits. They will ensure the video is high-quality and polished before publishing.
  • Promoter: Marketing & Communications Unit will assist in promoting videos to raise awareness, reach a wider audience, and deliver relevant content.
