Voting is just one form of civic engagement. There are lots of ways to be civically engaged besides voting. The Brookings Institute offers a bucket list of 76 things for civically involved individuals. Check out their list or see below for a shorter list  of ways to be engaged. 

• Read the news and check the facts. Not all news is good, trustworthy news. Learn to spot the hype and hyperbole. Check out this guide on Media Literacy.
• Contact your elected officials or comment on proposed rules or legislation. See these Tips for Writing Effective Comments.
• Organize a protest or start a petition.
• Know what's happening in your community by attending a city council meeting, commissioners court, or other public event. 
• Volunteer in your community. 
• If you're able, donate to an organization or cause. Check out Charity Navigator to ensure you're giving to reputable organization.
