Library Mentoring Program

This guide provides tools, templates, and resources to help participants in the UNT Libraries' Mentoring Program make the most of their mentoring experience.

One-on-One Mentoring

The UNT Libraries Career Development Committee coordinates the One-on-One Mentoring Program, designed to connect library employees seeking professional growth with experienced colleagues who can provide guidance, support, and perspective throughout the year.

What Is One-on-One Mentoring?

One-on-One Mentoring provides personalized, professional support through a mentor–mentee partnership. This program helps you explore your career goals, gain insight into library operations, and develop the confidence and skills needed to take the next step in your professional journey.

The program focuses on:

  • Career planning and professional goal setting
  • Building confidence in new or evolving roles
  • Understanding promotion and advancement processes
  • Developing workplace skills such as communication, collaboration, and leadership

Who Can Participate?

Any library employee interested in learning, growing, and connecting with a more experienced colleague is welcome to participate.

Whether you’re looking to:

  • Navigate a new position or transition
  • Gain insights into academic librarianship
  • Strengthen your professional network
  • Explore long-term career paths

…the Career Development Committee can pair you with a mentor who will help you set and pursue meaningful goals.

Mentees are matched with mentors based on interests, professional goals, and experience level to ensure a productive and supportive partnership.

What Does Mentoring Look Like?

The One-on-One Program emphasizes flexibility and shared learning:

  • Pairs are encouraged to meet at least once a month throughout the academic year.
  • Meetings can focus on discussion topics selected by the mentee, including challenges, goals, or new opportunities.
  • Mentors provide insight, encouragement, and constructive feedback.
  • Participants are invited to attend Fall and Spring training sessions to connect with other mentors and mentees and share best practices.

This partnership creates space for reflection, learning, and growth - empowering both mentors and mentees to expand their skills and perspectives.
