Books of Hours

Painting by Ambrosius Benson of a Young Woman in Orison Reading a Book of Hours

A book of hours is a Christian devotional book that was popular in the later Middle Ages. Books of Hours contain prayers to be said at specific hours in honor of the Virgin Mary. Books of Hours are the most common type of surviving illuminated Medieval manuscript.
