Google Scholar

What is Google Scholar (scholar.google.com)? 

Google Scholar is a federated search of "scholarly" materials. 

Pros of Google Scholar Cons of Google Scholar
  • It searches a lot like Google so it's familiar and easy to use
  • Google Scholar searched across disciplines
  • It links to materials owned and provided by UNT Libraries (see Linking to Libraries below)
  • It searches for scholarly articles, abstracts and books, but not popular magazines, newspapers or webpages
  • Google Scholar searches "grey literature" like conference proceedings
  • Coverage is wide ranging but not comprehensive
  • Search results cannot be filtered or limited, e.g. cannot limit to "peer reviewed" or "full text"
  • It is not clear when Google scholar is updated or new content is added
  • Google does not offer criteria for what makes its results "scholarly"

Search Tips from Google Scholar

Linking to Libraries

You can link Google Scholar to up to 5 libraries, including UNT Libraries.

To set up Library links:

  1. Go to scholar.google.com
  2. Click the 3 bars in the upper left corner
  3. Choose Settings
  4. Click Library Links
  5. Search for the libraries you'd like to link to and click the box to link

Other Google Scholar Tips and Tricks

Search Results

Available under "Settings," Search Results allows for some customization of returned results. From here, you can also set a service for importing citations, including RefWorks.

Google Scholar Button

Available under "Settings," you can install the Google Scholar Button to your browser to locate scholarly articles from regular web searches. Learn more here: Google Scholar Button.

Search Alerts

Create search alerts to learn about newly available resources for your field or assignment. To set an Alert, click the 3 bars in the upper left corner an choose Alerts. Input your Alert Query, Email where you'd like to receive updates, chose number of results you'd like to see in the alert, and click "Create Alert."
