Atlases, Maps, and Gazetteers

An atlas is a collection of maps, but may also include textual information, graphs, and data.

The Government Information Connection located in the Sycamore Library has a large collection of maps and posters. The collection includes historical plat maps of Texas, USGS topographic maps, and the Geologic Atlas of Texas. The first link below offers information about the maps collections at Sycamore Library and links to digital collections of maps on the web.

A gazetteer is an index or dictionary of geographical places and their names. Places may move, change names, or go away over time. Gazetteers capture places at a point in time.
