Literature mapping strategies help researchers identify connections between publications in order to find additional related sources.
Once you find a relevant source, view the list of references cited there and look up these publications to see if they are also relevant to your search.
Once you've found a relevant source, another way to search for related sources is to find out which publications have used this resource and cited it in their reference list. Tools, such as the database Scopus, can be used to find this information. When you look up an article in Scopus, you can see it's "cited by" list on the right-hand side.
When viewing reference lists or "cited by" lists to find related sources, it is helpful to understand what type of citation you're looking at so that you can find the publications listed there yourself. Use these examples of commonly cited items to help you distinguish citations for different types of sources.
Note differences in what is italicized, where quotation marks are used, where page numbers are present, and where volume and issue numbers (such as 42(3) or vol. 42, no. 3) are present to help you differentiate.
