Types of Resources

Required Resources for Writing Assignments

The writing assignments in this class require you to use specific types of resources in your research. Not everything you find online will meet the requirements of these assignments. This page will help guide you through the process of identifying the "type" of resource you have found to determine whether it meets the criteria of your assignment.

Writing Assignment #1 asks you to find both:

  • A scholarly journal article and
  • An article from either a trade journal, popular magazine or newspaper.

Writing Assignment #2 asks you to find:

  • Two scholarly journal articles.

How can you tell whether an article is from a scholarly journal, a trade journal, a magazine, a newspaper, or something else?

A scholarly journal article:

  • is written for scholars and researchers in the field; often contains academic vocabulary and utilizes one or more research methods to investigate a question or topic
  • is usually longer than other types of articles; typically more than a few pages
  • has an abstract
  • has a list of sources in the form of a bibliography/works cited list/list of references
  • has in-text citations
  • publication information includes: article title, journal title, author(s), volume #, issue #, year, and DOI
  • author's institutional affiliation is often included

A trade or industry journal article:

  • is written for people working in that industry or field; may contain industry specific vocabulary and focus on business or practical aspects of the industry
  • is usually shorter; length ranges from less than a page to a few pages long
  • usually has color photos, images, and advertisements
  • publication information includes:article title, journal title, publication location, author(s), and date (often day, month, and year).

A popular magazine article:

  • is written for a general audience; typically written to be of interest and accessible to people without specific industry knowledge
  • is usually shorter; length ranges from less than a page to a few pages long
  • usually has color photos, images, and advertisements
  • publication information includes:article title, magazine title, publication location, author(s), and date (often day, month, and year).

A newspaper article:

  • is written for a general audience; typically written to be accessible to people from a broad range of backgrounds
  • is usually shorter; length ranges from less than a page to a few pages long
  • usually has photos, images, and advertisements in black and white or in color
  • publication information includes:article title, newspaper title, publication location, author(s), and date (day, month, and year).
