Basic and Advanced Library Research

Welcome!

Learn how to do basic and advanced research at the UNT Libraries through this library guide. All sections are for basic and advanced researchers unless labeled ADVANCED only. In addition to this guide, you should consult with the subject librarian assigned to your department. Watch the Library Hacks: Find Your Subject Librarian video to find out how!

Before you start researching, familiarize yourself with the variety of accounts you can establish through the UNT Libraries to optimize your research experience. The sections below describe how to establish three of those accounts: Discover library catalog, RefWorks, and ILLiad accounts. A fourth type of account is a personal account within an electronic database. That topic is addressed under the Save Article References tab of the guide.

The UNT Libraries provide all of the accounts below and their associated services without any additional cost to you!

Accounts for Managing Your Research

Discover Catalog Account

All UNT enrolled students, faculty and staff have a Discover library catalog account. You can renew and manage books and other items you have checked out from the library.

Access your account from the Libraries homepage by clicking on the Accounts Login link at the top right.

Next enter your EUID and password in the UNT Library Catalog Login box on the left. There's a help link if you've forgotten your EUID and/or password.

See Overview: Your Account in the UNT Library Catalog Help pages for more information about account features.

RefWorks Account

RefWorks is a web-based research manager that allows you to create your own personal database of citations and documents for both academic and personal use. With RefWorks you can:

  • Easily export references from electronic databases, the UNT library catalog, text files, websites and more into your account
  • Quickly create reference lists for papers and projects in the citation style of your choice
  • Store, read and annotate files.

See the video below to get started or visit the RefWorks guide and RefWorks video tutorials for more information.

Advanced: ILLiad Account

ILLiad is the system the UNT Libraries use to process interlibrary loans (ILLs). When the book or article you want isn't available at the UNT Libraries, you can submit a request in your ILLiad account and the UNT Libraries will find another library that will loan the item to you. All UNT enrolled students, faculty, and staff are eligible to use ILL, and there's no additional cost for the service! See the steps below or the video, Interlibrary Loan Service, to get started.

You need to establish your ILLiad account because it is not provided automatically. Start by clicking on the Accounts Login link on the library homepage.

Next look to the right for the ILLiad Login section. At the bottom of that section, select the Create An ILLiad Account link.

Follow the instructions for registering for an ILLiad account. If you are a distance learning student, be sure to pick that option from the Status drop-down menu so you can request library item delivery in the future.

It takes about 5 minutes to complete registration, and when you're done you can immediately make a request. For assistance with your account, contact the Ask Us service.
