What counts as research?

Research is more than experiments or data collection. It’s about asking good questions and exploring what’s already known.

Think: What questions interest me? What do I want to know more about?

The Library is here to help you explore what’s already out there but it’s not as simple as a Google search.

Starting your research within millions of academic resources can feel intimidating. It takes practice to find exactly what you want among everything you don’t need. No worries though, that is why we are here to help.

Start at the UNT Libraries homepage for free resources, and keep reading this guide for more tips on navigating academic research.

Developing a topic

Before you can dive into the literature you need a research topic. Hint, it should be something that interests you!

Start broad, then narrow your focus, to ensure there is existing literature.

  • Example:

    • Too Broad: Climate change

    • Perfect scope: How is climate change affecting agriculture in Texas?

    • Too narrow: How is climate change affecting agriculture in Denton County?

Let your curiosity guide you as you refine your topic and begin exploring.
