Advanced Search Media Library

All Fields/"Keyword"

A basic way to search on a topic. An All Fields search looks for the word(s) you enter in all fields of an item's record: title, author, subject headings, notes and more. All Fields searches give you lots of search results, but many will not be relevant to your topic.

Hint: Use quotation marks ("") when searching for a phrase or multiword term.  Ex: "Arab Spring"

Title Search

A basic way to search for a specific film title, series title, or television episode title.

Example: Perform a title search for "The Puppy Episode" to find the specific season and disc that contains this particular episode from the television show "Ellen".

Example: Perform a title search for "Frontline" to find all episodes from the television series of the same title.

Author/Creator Search

Author/Creator searches can be used to search by name of film creators (director, actor, crew).

Hint: Search in "Last Name, First Name" format.  Example: "Bridges, Jeff"

Subject Search

subject search narrows your search and retrieves more titles relevant to your topic than a keyword search. The search looks for the word(s) you enter only in the item's subject headings, which come from the Library of Congress's predefined list of categories to describe topic. This is a more difficult search to conduct because must use the exact Library of Congress subject headings.

Hint: Perform a keyword search first. When you find an item relevant to your topic, look at its subject headings and use them for subsequent subject searches.

Additional Search Tips:

Use "AND" or "OR" between keywords to create a more complex search.

Example: "cinema verite" AND television

Example: "cinema verite" OR "direct cinema"
