Awarded annually to the most exceptional children's literature book penned by an American author, the Newbery Medal derives its name from the "Father of Children's Literature," eighteenth-century book publisher John Newbery. "Honor" books are those books that are runners-up to the winner. For more information about the history of the Newberry medal, committee members, and submission process, visit the ALSC Newbery Home Page.
