What is RefWorks?

What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic citation manager that allows you to create your own personal database of references for both academic and personal use. With RefWorks you can:

  • Easily import references from electronic databases, the UNT library catalog, text files, websites and more into your account
  • Quickly create reference lists for papers and projects in the citation style of your choice
  • Share references with colleagues

RefWorks is provided by the Libraries to the UNT community free of charge, but to create an account for the first time an access code is needed. Please contact our AskUs service at 940-565-3245 or email AskUs@unt.edu using your UNT email address to receive the code.

See the information below to start using your RefWorks account, provided to all students, faculty and staff by the UNT Libraries. Visit the RefWorks Library Guide for video tutorials and instructions for basic and advanced functions.

Tips for Using RefWorks

Off-Campus Use

If you are using RefWorks somewhere other than the UNT campus, you can still use your account. Simply enter your UNT email address and the password you created for the account.

Browsers

RefWorks works best with Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge. If you're having problems with RefWorks, try switching to a different browser.

Pop-ups

RefWorks functions with the use of some pop-ups. Be sure to turn off your pop-up blocker, or add RefWorks as an exception to the blocker.

Advantages of Using RefWorks

RefWorks has many useful features:

  • RefWorks can de-duplicate records so that you don't have the same entry multiple times in the same folder or list of references.
  • RefWorks allows you to create folders and sub-folders to organize your citation records.
  • RefWorks allows you to place one citation in multiple folders simultaneously.
  • RefWorks has thousands of citation style templates, including the most common ones like APA, MLA, Chicago, and Turabian.
  • RefWorks has a pop-up window tool that formats your in-text resource citation in the style you choose, allowing you to copy and paste from the tool into your document.
  • RefWorks also has add-on tools to allow in-text citations in your Word or Google documents, creating and inserting the citations as you go.
  • RefWorks allows you to upload a copy of a journal article to its citation record in your account.
  • RefWorks has a sharing feature that allows you to give others access to your folder(s).

Other Reference Managers

There are a number of free reference managers if RefWorks is not a good fit for your work style. Visit the Reference Managers library guide to learn more about Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote Basic, and other free reference managers.
