Welcome to the Browsing for Music Materials Guide!
In making this guide, our intention is for music performers and researchers to quickly obtain knowledge about where to access music scores and literature related to a particular area of study. We hope this resource will guide you to quickly access call number areas of interest in the Music Library.
The information in these guides is not all-encompassing, which means not every ensemble type or literature topic is represented — you will need to search the Discover catalog for specific title and subject inquiries or access our Overview on Library of Congress Call Numbers for Music guide.

The UNT Music Special Collections has a significant collection of early, eighteenth-century French opera music, especially with music by Jean-Baptiste Lully. Editions are available to view onsite in the Sandborn Music Reading room by request or online through the Virtual Music Rare Book Room on the UNT Digital Library. The Music Special Collections also contain several chant fragments and early works on music theory, such as Le istitutioni harmoniche by Gioseffo Zarlino.
For early music, researchers and performers might need to consult archives to obtain a copy of original manuscripts. Many early music manuscripts have yet to be transcribed and engraved. It is possible to request archival materials through the UNT Libraries' Interlibrary Loan department but the department can only request materials from specific partner libraries. Please email musicref@unt.edu if you need assistance with making a request for digitizations of rare resources from outside libraries.
We encourage you to visit Early Music Subject Guides:
If UNT does not have what you need, you can request items through Interlibrary Loan. Items in public domain can also be found on IMSLP. Even more resources are available on the Guide for Music Research.
