Music History Research Guide: How to Identify Scholarly Books

basics of research for music history

Identifying scholarly books is similar to identifying scholarly articles. A scholarly book will provide footnotes or endnotes to document information and ideas not original to the author. Usually it will also provide a bibliography that lists all of the sources the author consulted, not just the ones cited in footnotes or endnotes. In books on musical topics, the sources consulted may include scores or recordings.
