Citation tracing refers to both finding references cited in a given article and finding newer articles that cite the original article. Citation tracing allows you to follow research through time. Cited references are past research, while citing works are more recent (relative to the article you already know about.)

Scopus allows users to search the literature, follow citations, and see who cited an article. Researchers can also use Scopus metrics to help demonstrate the value of their work.

Google ScholarBe careful using Google Scholar for literature searching as the results list can be too large, search algorithms are not transparent, and search results may not be reproducible. Google Scholar can still be useful for some literature searches and it can be helpful for citation tracing as well.
