Banned Books Week is a time to reflect on censorship in this country and the harm it causes our citizens. During the week you will see different events and activities that highlight the many books in libraries that have been banned or challenged by their communities.
A book that has been banned means it has been removed from a library collection all together. A book that has been challenged is temporarily removed from a library's shelves and is reviewed by administrators before a decision is made to withdraw the book from the collection or restrict access to the book.
Despite these efforts to challenge and ban books, librarians, teachers, students, and community members have been successful in keeping these books on the shelves in a majority of cases by standing up and speaking out against censorship.
Celebrate Banned Books Week with us this year and tell us about what Banned Books you have read @UNT_Libraries!
