The APA Publication Manual, 7th edition now requires that article and e-book citations contain DOIs, except in cases where a DOI is not assigned to the item. APA 7th requires that the DOI come at the end of the citation and be in the format of a url, meaning the prefix, https://doi.org/, is put in front of the actual DOI. The following is an example of an article citation in APA format with the DOI in the form of a url:
Ramsey, A. T., & Montgomery, K. (2014). Technology-based interventions in social work practice: A systematic review of mental health interventions. Social Work in Health Care, 53(9), 883-899. https://doi.org/10.1080/00981389.2014.925531
DOI stands for Digital Object Identifier. DOIs are used to provide a stable source for information about a digital object, such as an article or e-book, including where it can be found on the Internet. Information about a digital object may change over time, including where to find it, but its DOI does not change.
DOIs are usually included in the machine-generated citations that you can copy from library databases. If your citation does not automatically include the DOI and/or you cannot find the DOI, you can search for the DOI using the Crossref.org website's search.
Paste a title or an entire citation into the search box on crossref.org, to find the item's DOI. The DOI that crossref.org provides will already have the required https://doi.org/ prefix in front of it, so that you can copy and paste it into your citation.
