RefWorks

Learn how to use RefWorks, the reference and research manager available to all UNT students, faculty, and staff.

RefWorks Writing Tools

Write-N-Cite and the newer RefWorks Citation Manager are Microsoft Word writing tools produced by RefWorks. RefWorks for Google Docs is an add-on for Google Chrome. When installed, all three allow you to insert in-text citations and create a dynamic bibliography in the citation style of your choice while you are writing a paper. See the writing tools in action in the Writing with RefWorks video and read the RefWorks Add-ons article in the RefWorks Knowledge Center to learn which writing tool is right for your computer. A writing tool integrated with a reference manager like RefWorks is a must when you are writing a thesis or dissertation! Note: RefWorks Citation Manager requires access to the Microsoft Word Store for installation.

Steps for installing RefWorks Citation Manager

Write-N-Cite (WNC)

WNC for Word is available for both Windows and Mac. In Windows, it supports Word 2016 and earlier versions, and in Mac, Word 2011 and Word 2008. The downloads are available in the Tools - Tools section on the top ribbon of your RefWorks account. Or visit the RefWorks Customer Knowledge Center for details on software requirements (RefWorks Write-N-Cite Downloads) and installation (RefWorks Add-Ons).

WNC for Word has not been tested with Word 2019 or Office 365, according to RefWorks technical support. However, you can try installation anyway if that's your only option. We've had a handful of students report they were successful in using WNC for Word with these Word versions.

Learn how to use WNC for Word by viewing the Writing with RefWorks video. Contact the RefWorks administrator, if you have questions.

RefWorks for Google Docs (RGD)

RGD is the easiest of the three writing tools to install because you avoid the need for certain versions of Microsoft Word. All you need on your computer is Google Docs and access to the Chrome store through Google Docs.

BONUS! Multiple people can work on the same document, synchronously or asynchronously, if you use RefWorks for Google Docs! This is not true for Write-n-Cite or RefWorks Citation Manager, in which case, you have to pass a document around between group members.

See RefWorks Add-Ons to determine which operating systems support RGD and see RefWorks for Google Docs to install the add-on. If you run into any difficulties, please contact the Refworks administrator for assistance.
