RefWorks: RefWorks Writing Tools

Learn how to use RefWorks, the reference and research manager available to all UNT students, faculty, and staff.

Write-N-Cite and the newer RefWorks Citation Manager are Microsoft Word writing tools produced by RefWorks. RefWorks for Google Docs is an add-on for Google Chrome. When installed, all 3 allow you to insert in-text citations and create a dynamic bibliography in the citation style of your choice while you are writing a paper. See the writing tools in action in this video. A word processor plugin is a must when you are writing a thesis or dissertation! See more information below about which you should use and how to install them.

Note: RefWorks Citation Manager requires access to the Microsoft Word Store for installation. The Word Store is blocked on 1) UNT computers, and 2) in Microsoft Office products obtained from the University for your own computer. If this applies to you, consider using RefWorks for Google Docs instead or a different reference manager with a Word plugin you can install, such as Mendeley or Zotero. Learn more about these options on the Reference Managers guide.

RefWorks for Google Docs (RGD)

RGD is the easiest of the 3 writing tools to install because you avoid the need for certain versions of Microsoft Word. All you need on your computer is Google Docs and access to the Chrome store through Google Docs. See Finding the Right Writing Tool Plug-in to see which operating systems support RGD and RefWorks for Google Docs to install the add-on. If you run into any difficulties, please contact Erin O'Toole for assistance.

Write-N-Cite (WNC)

WNC for Word is available for both Windows and Mac. In Windows, it supports Word 2016 and earlier versions, and in Mac, Word 2011 and Word 2008. The downloads are available in the Tools - Tools section on the top ribbon of your RefWorks account. Or visit the ExLibris Knowledge Center for details on software requirements and installation.

WNC for Word has not been tested with Word 2019 or Office 365, according to RefWorks technical support. However, you can try installation anyway if that's your only option. We've had a handful of students report they were successful in using WNC for Word with these Word versions.

RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM)

Note: If you are using Word 2016 you obtained from UNT, the Word Store is blocked so you won't be able to add in RCM. Windows users - please install Write-N-Cite instead. Mac users - consider using another reference manager on your computer.

RCM is available for Windows and Mac Word 2016 only as of January 1, 2020. A version for Office 2019 and Office 365 was supposed to be released by December 31, 2020 - we are still waiting. For installation, see the screenshots below from the Tools - Tools section on the top ribbon of your RefWorks account. Or visit the Ex Libris Knowledge Center for details on installation
