Google Patents

Searching for patents is not always easy, but Google Patents does what it can to help.

What is Google Patents (patents.google.com)? 

Google Patents includes a million + patents from 100+ patent offices around the world. Results may also include technical documents, books indexed in Google Books and Google Scholar as well as documents from the Prior Art Archive. 
(What is Prior Art? It's any evidence that your invention is already known. Source and more: EPO.org)

Searching Google Patents

Begin your search in a number of ways:

  • Enter a patent publication or application number 15/703,271 or D/604,773 or 10,255,755
  • Enter keywords or phrases such as autonomous vehicle
    • Use quotations for exact phrases "autonomous vehicle"
    • Use operators to search inventor or assignee names, example: assignee: google, inc. or inventor: page
    • Restrict results by date using before or after operator, example: before: 2005 or after: 2005
  • When searching prior art, check the box to "Include non-patent literature.
