Clickers & Wikis: what are they?

You're going to be using clickers and wikis in your class. Here's brief information to get you started.

What are Wikis?


  • WIKI comes from the Hawaiian word “wiki-wiki” meaning “quick.” It was created in 1995 by Ward Cunningham to provide an easier web authoring tool.
  • Wikis are a collaborative online tool. Any member of a group can create, view, and modify them. Wiki software tracks changes, enabling the users to see all revisions made to a document and by whom.


  • Can be set up within Blackboard to allow collaborative editing by professor and students.
  • Makes it easy to create web pages, add pages, and navigate pages.
  • Facilitates peer review of projects. Students draft the document, add images and links, get feedback, revise the document, share critiques, write the formal paper, do a final review, and submit the assignment.
  • Facilitates group authoring. A wiki page lets you collaborate and edit your document in a single online location. All group members have immediate, equal access to the most recent version of the document. Access the wiki from anywhere.
  • No more need to send email corrections back and forth. All changes are made immediately in one location.
  • Keeps a log of changes. You can easily track the status of a group project. You can see who is contributing and when.
  • Wikis make it easy to collect data from groups of students.
  • A wiki can take the place of the usual presentation software to present your final project.
