Preliminary research suggests that although men and male adolescents are more likely to complete suicide compared to females, there is evidence to suggest clinical success if they are engaged in treatment...In this session, Dr. Jobes works with a high school-aged boy who seriously considers suicide as an attractive option for escaping problems in his life.
Adolescent Girls Who Are Suicidal
Suicide attempts by adolescent girls are three times as frequent as those by boys. Dr. Jobes's approach emphasizes building an alliance with the client, attending closely as she talks about her problems and feelings, and inspiring the client's motivation to pursue psychological and behavioral change.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolecents with Multiple Problems
In Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents With Multiple Problems, Alec L. Miller demonstrates this compassionate, principle-based therapy for clients who have difficulty regulating emotions and behaviors. Emotional dysregulation is common among adolescents, often leading them to self-injurious behavior, including suicide. Studies have shown that dialectical behavior therapy can significantly reduce suicide attempts and help adolescent clients deal with multiple problems. In this session, Dr. Miller works with a 17-year-old boy who is depressed, abusing marijuana, and who has recently contemplated suicide. Dr. Miller highlights the client's strengths while trying to obtain commitment to treatment in order to reduce his depression and marijuana use and build a life worth living. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a compassionate, principle-based psychotherapy for suicidal multiproblem, multidiagnostic individuals who have significant difficulty regulating emotions and behaviors.
Functional Family Therapy
Features a discussion with James F. Alexander on functional family therapy (FFT), a family-based prevention and intervention program that has been applied successfully in a variety of contexts to treat a range of high-risk youth and their families. Explains how this approach focuses on the strengthening relationships in the family by opening up communication and reframing negative behaviors by putting them within a positive relational context. Obsessive-compulsive Behavior
Dr. Martin M. Antony demonstrates his approach to working with this common problem. Dr. Antony works within a cognitive-behavioral framework, which includes an exploration of the triggers that bring on the client's anxiety, prolonged exposure to these cues, and prevention of the client's compulsive behavior. The client is taught strategies for coping with anxiety that arises during the course of the practice. In this session, Dr. Antony works with a woman in her 30's who exhibits compulsive behavior surrounding counting and order.

Jeffrey J. Magnavita demonstrates his unified model of conceptualizing personality dysfunction and focusing treatment using four well-established constructs as pattern recognition tools. His approach tailors psychotherapy to each client, systematically interweaving therapeutic modalities, strategies, and interventions using a biopsychosocial perspective. A unified framework allows for the holisitic blending of many therapeutic strategies selected from an array of evidence-based approaches. A systematic perspective is used to organize the many levels of analysis possible in therapy and to determine which therapeutic technique or model works best for an individual client.

G. Alan Marlatt demonstrates his approach to helping clients with substance addictions prevent or cope with relapses during efforts to change addictive behavior.
Treatment with Defiant and Aggressive Adolescents
Dr. Fred J. Hanna demonstrates his practical approach to working with adolescents who have behavior problems. Dr. Hanna's precursors to change model has been used successfully with teenagers who are involved in drugs, gangs, violence, or serious misbehavior in school and other situations. This approach emphasizes seven precursors to change, including instilling a sense of necessity for change and the hope that change is attainable, along with the willingness to experience anxiety and confront issues.
Time-Limited Dynamic Psychotherapy: Making Every Session Count (DVD)
Dr. Hanna Levenson, a leading proponent of Time-Limited Dynamic Psychotherapy (TLDP), takes the viewer through the highlights of a 20 session course of therapy with a depressed, passive, and somatizing 74 year-old man. She illustrates how to develop and maintain a focus of treatment, intervene, and terminate in a time-effective manner. C.A.T.: Constructional Aggression Treatment (for Dogs)
C.A.T. is a functional approach to changing aggressive behavior. It acknowledges that the dog is already receiving reinforcement for aggression and sets up a procedure in which the same reinforcer that currently supports the aggression is arranged to follow only desirable, safe behaviors. As the procedure progresses, the ultimate outcome is a once-aggressive dog that is now friendly.
