Artstor is an image database of over a million high resolution images of art and cultural objects owned by museums around the world. The images are licensed for use in class assignments (just not on the web or for commercial purposes). The images can can be downloaded along with the textual catalog entry when you register for a free account (click "register" in the top right corner). You will also have the ability to put images in your own Artstor image folder if you have an account.
*If accessing off campus, you will be asked for an EUID and EUID password.
Basic Search - just search a general topic in the basic default search box, like women or the name of the culture (ex. Mesoamerican, Oceanic, Asian, African, Indian), and then you will see art images of women from many civilizations, or artworks from the culture throughout many time periods. Then look on the the left side of your screen where you will see many countries, civilizations and other options to redefine your search. Just click on any of those links to see artworks of women or the culture in that country or civilization.
Advanced Search -
Click on the "Advanced Search" link and you will be able to limit your search by Geography, Date, etc. Be sure to set your date to C.E. since artworks must be from 1300 C.E. onwards.
Just click on the thumbnail image of an artwork of interest and then a large resolution image will open. Click on the button with an "i" on it to see the textual catalog entry that accompanies the image.
